The term CMR stands for “Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road.” A CMR consignment note is a document that serves as an international agreement to regulate road freight transportation. The CMR document standardizes and regulates legal issues concerning the transport of goods throughout most of the European states.
What Purpose Does the CMR Document Hold?
Why does the CMR convention matter? Here are two primary purposes:
- CMRs are contracts between the parties involved in the transport of goods and hold each party liable
- CMRs also specify the compensation due in situations where the goods arrive damaged
Since CMRs are made up of four copies, it is not a problem if an issued CMR delivery note is lost during transportation. The contract remains upheld and valid nonetheless.
A CMR document also helps with liability purposes. With it, the sender and carrier have some form of protection. In situations where goods are damaged or lost, the consignor or consignee can file a claim, hold the freight company accountable, and consequently receive compensation.
Thanks to the CMR transport document, disputes are quickly resolved between the parties involved. In addition, the CMR convention helps eliminate fraud and malpractice.
Should any misinformation appear on the CMR delivery note, it is the sender who is held accountable. The convention maintains that it is the consignor’s responsibility to provide accurate and complete information.
